About Canoe Alaska
CanoeAlaska Outdoor Rentals is family-owned and operated by Josh Davis and his family. The business began as a retail store in 1975, run by Josh’s parents, Ron and Lou, and his older brother, Todd. Recognizing the need for instruction on the river, CanoeAlaska soon began offering canoe and kayak lessons, which later expanded into guided wilderness trips on the Interior rivers of Alaska.
Josh grew up immersed in the business, helping with canoe classes and guiding river trips alongside his parents. At age 18, he became a certified canoe instructor and spent a summer teaching whitewater canoeing in North Carolina. The following year, he returned to CanoeAlaska to focus on teaching classes and leading wilderness expeditions. After exploring other opportunities while his parents continued the business, Josh returned to the family business when his parents retired in 2000.
In 2015, Josh purchased Alaska Outdoor Rentals and Guides from Larry Katkin and re-acquired the corporate name, CanoeAlaska. He now operates the business under its original name, continuing the family tradition of getting people out on Alaskan rivers.
Today, CanoeAlaska is truly a family affair. Josh’s wife, KK Davis, helps oversee operations, while their sons contribute in meaningful ways. Nairn Davis, 23, grew up working at CanoeAlaska and ran the shop from 2019–2024; he now lives in Montana. Aillig Davis, 14, has been helping at the shop over the past two summers and will continue to assist in seasonal operations.
Together, the Davis family is dedicated to sharing Alaska’s rivers and wilderness with paddlers of all ages and skill levels.
